Holy basil, or Tulsi in Hindu, has been revered for millennia in Indian culture as a spiritual symbol, ritual offering and household medicine. This little miracle plant is said to have antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, adaptogenic, immunomodulating, antioxidant, neuroprotective, radioprotective, anti-cancer, alterative, antispasmodic, expectorant, decongestant, carminative, stimulating, emmenagogue, galactagogue, nervine, heart opening and antidepressant actions. Wow! Here is a double-blind study on its immunomodulatory effects.

Ginger: a fiery root that supports digestion, heart health and the immune system. By relaxing the muscles surrounding the arteries and then stimulating circulation, ginger delivers warmth to the body’s extremities, or promotes sweating to cool the body in the case of fever. The volatile oils in ginger also stimulate the immune system to fight bacterial and viral infections, and it has been effective in combatting upper respiratory infections (see study).

Cinnamon, mostly added for flavor in this case, also has anti-inflammatory compounds and antioxidants that are supportive to this herbal blend. Orange peel and other spices are added to create a lively citrus-chai flavor.
